Stahl's Automotive Museum Visit
By Dean V. Ricci -- photo gallery by Judith A. Ricci

January 13, 2015 -- Chesterfield, Michigan. On Tuesdays of each and every week, you can take a walk through a collection of automobiles that will impress you like few other collections can. I speak of the Stahl's Automotive Museum housed in an industrial park in Chesterfield, Michigan.

A collection of vehicles comprised mostly of cars from the "Brass" era, vehicles manufactured in the 1900s through 1940s make up majority of cars on display. There are also an assortment of modern cars including examples from the 50s and 60s.

There is even a fine example of a Tucker Torpedo, which when readied to be taken out on the road, gets insured for $5 Million dollars before it leaves the building.

That is one thing that you'll notice about the cars in this collection. Each and every one of them has a valid Michigan Historical Vehicle License plate attached to it. These cars are all road worthy, which is somewhat rare for a collection of this size. When's the last time you purchased license tabs for 50 or 60 vehicles? No easy task.

The vast collection of cars in the museum has some one of kind "one off" cars such as a 1900s era Grand Rapids (named for the city in which it was built). a Bentley which has the body clad in Green Leather instead of traditional "paint" and a 1979 Duesenberg II. In 1979, the folks that bought the remains of the Duesenberg factory, started a project of building a second generation of classic "Duesy's" with modern day running gear on the inside. The particular car on the showroom floor of Stahl's has a Tilt Steering Wheel column, something not even yet invented when these cars were built originally.

Mr. Stahl has spent many years and as can be seen, many dollars assembling this fine collection. Mr. Stahl is known for his work making Sports Jerseys. His company has been a major Sports Jersey producer for many years, and holds a number of patented processes for their production.

As big as this collection is, Mr. Stahl has another 30 or so cars stored in another facility located in St. Clair Shores, Michigan -- the original home of the Stahl's collection.

The museum is open to the public on Tuesdays from 1pm to 4pm weekly. The museum can also be rented for special gatherings.
