A Double Header
by Jeff Burgy

Sunday February 23, 2014 -- I had an opportunity to visit the collection of Jim and Rick Schmidt at NPD's headquarters in Ocala, Florida. I've seen this collection a number of times, but this time was special. Rick Schmidt personally led the tour through the collection and told stories about the cars as we wandered through their vast collection.

Many of these cars in the NPD collection are low milage unrestored originals. All of them are in beautiful condition.

The second leg of my tour took me to "Big Daddy" Don Garlits's museum. He has two buildings in Ocala, Florida with a very impressive display of cars. One building houses the "Museum of Drag Racing", including many of the famous race cars that Garlits and others drove to fame in the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s. Most of the race cars are dragsters, but there are a few land speed record cars, as well as awesome displays of speed parts and engines.

The second building at the Garlits complex holds a vast collection of antique cars, including an example of most every Ford bodystyle built in the 30s and 40s. It also includes many of the cars that members of the Garlits family drove on the street back in the day.
